With the goal of promoting the right to a healthy environment and strengthening community responsibility in solid waste management, World Vision carried out a community cleanup day in La Pista, a neighborhood in the municipality of Maicao, as part of the “Major Donors Emergency Humanitarian Assistance” project.
The action included the delivery and installation of 15 waste containers distributed across five strategic points in the settlement, along with the construction of concrete bases for proper placement. This intervention was designed in response to findings from a community assessment that revealed high levels of solid waste accumulation near homes and public paths—posing risks to the health and well-being of families, especially girls, boys, and adolescents.
According to local estimates, La Pista generates around 3 to 5 tons of solid waste each week, much of which ends up in informal dumps and unpaved roads, leading to strong odors, the spread of disease-carrying vectors, and health risks for residents.

To mark World Cleanup Day, World Vision brought together residents from different blocks of La Pista to take part in a community cleanup and environmental awareness activity focused on collecting waste in critical areas and eliminating four informal dumping sites. The activity drew more than 300 participants, including community leaders, institutional representatives, and World Vision’s protection team, under the message: “A healthy environment — everyone’s right.”
Additionally, an inter-institutional and community meeting was held to share project updates and strengthen joint commitments on waste management. As a result, new collaboration agreements were built with Interaseo, the Health Secretariat, local government, and community police to ensure the sustainability of these actions.
The day concluded with the signing of a handover agreement, with both community members and institutions reaffirming their shared commitment to creating cleaner, safer, and healthier environments for children and families in La Pista.
